BRAC doesn't recommend closing Carlisle Barracks

Friday: May 13, 2005 - at the public square at about 10 AM  Sen. Santorum, Rep. Platts and all the local reps were gathered. Santorum made the announcement that Carlisle Barracks is not slated for closing by the BRAC  commission. We made the first cut, as did all the  local bases surrounding us. There were two in Cumberland County, one in  Shippensburg and Ft. Indiantown Gap to the east of us. Santorum seemed to be credited for the save.  We'll stay on top of this and see what happens in September. We might be out of the woods. It doesn't hurt to bring attention to the historic issues at those barracks. If there's one good thing that's come out of all this, it's the realization on the part of non-Indian people that there are dozens of historic Carlisle Indian School buildings extant. Thank you all for your letters, phone calls and conversations in high places urging that this historic site continue to be protected.

This entrance to the Carlisle Indian Industrial School still offers the same view as it did in the late 1890's. You can stand at this spot today. Help protect this historic site by urging your congresspeople, Pennsylvania representatives and media outlets to keep the Carlisle Barracks open.  A decision on BRAC is slated to be made by May, 2005.

Update on BRAC commission news - thanks Juanita Neconie for the link.

"Rumsfeld is expected to release his list next week, Principi said. The commission then has four months to analyze the department's findings before submitting its list of recommendations to the White House by Sept. 8."
